Evenly sprinkle shredded cheese atop each bread slice. Lay one slice of ham over the cheese if desired.

Tightly roll up each bread slice. Secure with toothpicks if needed to hold shape.

Heat a non-stick skillet over medium to medium-low heat. Melt the butter evenly in the pan.

Arrange the roll-ups seam side down. Cook for 5 to 8 minutes, turning regularly with tongs to achieve even golden browning on all sides.
